Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services.  Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

  • Upon arrival, the contractor was engaged in excavation using a Komatsu PC 360LC on the south of the project site. Fill was being transported with two tandem-axled dump trucks near the parking areas and tennis courts, while dozing was performed with a Komatsu 39PXI.
  • Boulder fill was used in backfilling under the tennis court with proof-rolling utilized to verify stability in lieu of density testing.

During our site inspection, it was observed that the compaction process was performed in accordance with project requirements. Soil compaction was tested using a nuclear gauge to measure the compaction factor. The results obtained indicated a satisfactory compaction level of 95%, which is consistent with project specifications.

The contractor, Savannah Pipe Works, has commenced work on manholes C5 and C4 using a Kobelco SK 350LC excavator. During the excavation process, water drains and rock boulders, remnants from previous work, were encountered. Consequently, the contractor shifted focus to Manhole C3, which was connected to the mainline and the primary road.

Excavation for Manhole C3 was performed with a Takeuchi EX3 TB290. Pavement removal and clearing were carried out and continued into the subsequent day. During the excavation for Manhole C3 several construction obstructions were encountered, and additional care was required to continue manhole installation.
