Observations/Finding
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.
- After the rain from the previous day, the contractor began scarifying and aerating using a Komatsu 39PXi dozer to help move and redistribute the soil, allowing it to dry more quickly. At the same time, they used the Komatsu PC 360LC to fix and adjust the slopes of the site.
Savannah Pipe Works:
The contractor proceeded with installation and backfilling work on manhole D7, utilizing a Kobelco SK 350LC excavator. Rock boulders present on the site were being broken down into smaller pieces using a Komatsu 210LC excavator. Following excavation, backfill material was placed and compacted in one-foot lifts. Compaction was carried out using a combination of manual compactors, a Dynapac remote-control compactor, and final compaction of the upper layers with a HAMM R2 roller. Proof-rolling and general probing found the area stable. Density testing using a nuclear density gauge could not be performed due to the boulder fill present.
The excavation for Manhole C5 has commenced, and during the process, rock boulders were encountered along with the presence of a water drain, which began to fill the excavation pit. As a result, it was recommended to the contractor to dewater following the stopping of seepage then demuck prior to continued backfilling. Once the water is adequately drained and the subgrade stable, work will continue the following day.
