Observations/Finding

The site visit was conducted to perform quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawings/specifications, applicable codes, and material submittals.

    Observations

• Fill Placement and Compaction:

  • Observed the placement and compaction of graded aggregate base (GAB) around sewer trench MH-1.

  • Contractor placed #89 stone around MH-1 from bottom to top.

  • Approximately 19 cubic yards of low slab concrete were placed (location shown in attached photographs).

• Compaction Testing:

  • At the time of arrival, 6-inch lifts were being placed and compacted using trench compaction equipment.

  • Compaction testing was performed using a Troxler nuclear density gauge in accordance with ASTM D2937.

  • General probing was conducted using a 3/8″ diameter probe rod.

• Test Results:

  • Density test results indicate that most of the compacted materials met the project requirement of 95% of the maximum dry density as determined by a Modified Proctor (ASTM D698).

• Dowel Bars:

  • Dowel bars were observed to have epoxy coating.

  • Embedment length appeared to be approximately 15 inches into the concrete (location shown in attached photographs).

• Concrete Placement:

  • Concrete placed on this date appeared to comply with project specifications regarding temperature, air content, and batch-to-placement time.

  Conclusion

The observed construction activities, including fill placement, compaction, and concrete placement, were performed in general accordance with the project specifications and applicable standards. Compaction test results support compliance with the required density specifications. No deficiencies were noted during this site visit.

We also transferred previously cast test cylinders to our laboratory.
