Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services.  Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Our ASEC representative was on site as requested by the contractor (Wilbanks) for the observation/testing of the placement of fill/backfill.

The contractor stripped topsoil from Lot #81 to approximately Lot #89. The topsoil was placed on bank (green space) along Lots #127 through #133.

The technician observed a proof-roll of Lots #81 through #86. There were no signs of severe pumping and/or deflection. Another proof-roll will be performed on the next workday for Lots #87 to #89 (temporary detention pond in Lot #90).

The contractor then began placing fill in lifts of approx. 8in to 12in thick across Lot #81 to approximately Lot #85, and on Lot #106 and #107. Material was excavated from Lot #1, and #90 to be placed for these lifts. Density testing was performed with results provided to the contractor. The technician recommended the contractor allow ample time to aerate wet soils before recompacting.

The contractor continued backfilling for the pipeline from SSMH4.1 to SSMH4.2. The pipeline was bedded with No. 57 stone to elevation up to the center of pipeline. The approximate center of the pipeline was reported to be soft during excavation. The technician generally probed this area of the trench using a 3/8″ diameter probe rod, which showed approximately 8 inches of embedment. The technician recommended that the contractor undercut another 8 to 12 inches, or until more stable soils were encountered. Then the contractor could bed the trench with No. 57 stone o or riprap with a No. 57 stone cap.
