Observations/Finding
The site visit conducted by your AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the retaining wall B project involved quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawings, specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals.
The placement and compaction of backfill for retaining wall B continued on this day. At the time of arrival, the representative observed that work was in progress with 8-inch lifts being placed and compacted using remote trench compactors.
Compaction testing was performed using a Troxler nuclear density gauge of soil (ASTM D 2937), along with general probing using a 3/8″ diameter probe rod. Density test results indicated that most of the compacted materials did not meet the project requirement of 95% of the maximum dry density obtained by a Standard Proctor (ASTM D698). Test results indicated this was due to much higher moisture contents than optimum. As a result, retesting was scheduled; however, the contractor canceled the job on this day.
Note: Due to rainfall the day before, the moisture content was 30%, which was much higher than the specified moisture range.
