Observations/Finding

At the request of the client’s representative, our AS ENGINEERING AND CONSULTING, LLC (ASEC) representative visited the job site to observe the contractor’s work activities from a quality standpoint to verify compliance with project drawings/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals and conducted QC testing per the project drawings and specifications.  The following observations were made during our evaluation:

This report provides a reassessment of the footing for the retaining wall.  The assessment includes excavation dimensions, depth, cleanliness, and the results of soil testing using a hand auger and Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) (ASTM STP-399), along with general probing tests.

The footing excavations were noted to be in general accordance with the project drawings with respect to size and depth.

Additionally, it was observed that the footing excavations were generally free of loose soil, debris, and water.

Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (ASTM STP-399) results at the test locations displayed soils capable of supporting a net allowable bearing pressure of 900 psf.

General probing using a 3/8″ diameter probe rod found surficial soils in the base of the footing to be suitable for concrete placement.

The contractor placed 6 inches of GAB in the footing using a trench compactor for compaction.

  • Footing subgrade conditions should remain dry and free of loose soils/debris prior to concrete placement. If exposed to inclement weather, the foundation subgrade should be re-observed by ASEC,

Also, Our ASEC representative observed the placement of MSE retaining walls. It was noted that base course was backfilled behind the block and the cells with No. 57 stone.  Every 2nd course a geotextile fabric was placed followed by an 8-inch compacted lift.  No. 57 stone was utilized 1-foot behind the block and within the cells.  No remedial recommendation was necessary.

NOTE: Performed check plug test to verify that in-situ soils matched the moisture-density relationship (proctor) for this project.

We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any questions regarding this report, please feel free to contact us. We will be more than happy to discuss it with you.
