Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Our ASEC representative was on site for the observation/testing of the placement of fill/backfill and observation of blast drilling.

The contractor continued placing approximately 6-inch lifts of fill in the deceleration lane by the main entrance. The size of the lifts was reduced due to equipment breaking down and having to use a smaller sheep-foot roller for compaction. It was recommended to maintain 6-inch to 8-inch lifts to provide suitable compaction. The contractor agreed and spread the lifts using GPS on the dozer to help regulate lift size during placement. This will be the routine until a larger sheep-foot compactor is delivered to the site, or until the larger one already on site is repaired. Density testing was performed, and all test results were provided to the contractor. Any failed tests were retested after the contractor compacted the area again.

There were no incidents reported during the day’s activities. Drilling was conducted in the vicinity of the proposed retention pond located at the northwest end of the site, following a mass rock drilling pattern. A total of 13 holes were drilled to a depth of 16 feet, 8 holes to 14 feet, 6 holes to 12 feet, and 63 holes to 11 feet. Rock was encountered at depths ranging from approximately 1 foot to 5 feet below the ground surface in this area. Controlled blasting was performed within the previously drilled section of the retention pond area. The grid spacing, as documented in the attached drilling log, was 8 feet by 8 feet. Based on typical field practices and prior experience, an overdrill depth of 3 feet was assumed for calculation purposes. If this assumption differs from the actual drilling method, please advise so the calculations can be revised accordingly. Using these parameters, the total calculated volume of mass rock drilled for the day is estimated to be 1,528.89 cubic yards.

We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any questions regarding this report, please feel free to contact us. We will be more than happy to discuss it with you.
