Daily Field Report
Observations/Finding
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials
submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.
Our ASEC representative was on site to observe the contractor (NG Grading) and for the observation/testing of the placement of fill/backfill. The grading crew placed soil lifts of approximately 8 to 12 inches in size across Lots #14 through #19. Lifts were compacted using a sheep-foot roller. ASEC watched as loaded off road trucks rolled across the lifts to check for stability. There were no signs of severe pumping or deflection present at this time. Density testing was performed, and test results were provided to the contractor.
Note: It appears that the contractor has started mixing topsoil into the structural fill when loading trucks. This is against our recommendation. The contractor is benching in natural slopes and spreading the benched topsoil across the fill areas. The contractor also has been spreading an approximate 1 foot lift of wet topsoil across cut (excavation) areas to dry and be mixed in. Now the contractor has started adding 2 to 3 buckets of topsoil into the off-road trucks as they are being loaded. ASEC has consistently been in communication with the contractor about the amount of topsoil being mixed into the fill. The concern is the organics present in the topsoil. It appears to have a large quantity of tree limbs, tree trunks, and smaller organics present. If the topsoil is clean and free of organics, mixing a small amount should be acceptable.
The wall contractors began excavation of the wall footing. There was no rock present on site to begin backfilling of the footing. The wall crew left the site for the day and will begin tomorrow when the material is present on site.
We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any questions regarding this report, please feel free to contact us. We will be more than happy to discuss it with you.
