Observations/Finding
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.
Crew 1 continued backfilling operations at locations B8–B9. Backfill material was placed in controlled lifts of approximately 6–8 inches. Each lift was compacted using a sheep’s foot roller to achieve the required density and provide uniform support. Compaction was performed thoroughly before placing subsequent lifts, and the material at this location met the specified compaction requirements.
Crew 2 resumed backfilling operations from point E1 to Detention Pond 1. An initial lift of backfill material exceeding 8 inches was placed and compacted; however, the material did not meet the required density due to excessive lift thickness and high moisture content. It was recommended that the contractor place backfill in controlled lifts of 6–8 inches and blend the wet material with drier soil. After implementing these recommendations, the contractor reworked the area, placed the fill in 6–8 inch lifts, and compacted each lift thoroughly. The reworked material met the specified density requirements.
Recommendation:
Recommended that backfill should be placed in controlled lifts of 6–8 inches.
