Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of observing an exploratory excavation for the saturated underlying subgrade soils for the decel lane and entrance/exit to the Greene Farms subdivision. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Our representative was on site to observe existing subgrade soils for the entrance drive off Old Alabama Road. The underlying subgrade soils were observed by excavation of a test hole off the edge of the existing asphalt roadway using a small excavator. The material excavated to a depth of -3.5′ to -4′ was observed to be a saturated clay-based fill material. The excavation was stopped at this elevation which was probed and appeared slightly stable prior to encountering groundwater. It was recommended to the contractor to complete excavation at this present elevation with continuing observation by probing the bottom of excavation. The excavated materials were recommended to be replaced with full depth GAB (graded aggregate base) stone in two-foot lifts tracking the first two-foot lift in using a track dozer or small excavator. The remaining depth of stone should then be placed in another lift and compact with sufficient moisture using a vibratory smooth drum roller to 98% compaction. However, before the excavation was completed the contractor broke the water line and the excavation filled with water. The contractor then began pumping water to make the repairs on the water line. Our representative left the site at this point and plans to return when the repairs and excavation is completed for further observation.

We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any questions regarding this report, please feel free to contact us. We will be more than happy to discuss it with you.
