Observations/Finding
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.
During our inspection, the contractor excavated the remaining subgrade to the required design elevation along the footing alignment. After excavation was completed, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing was performed to evaluate the bearing of the subgrade soils. The soil encountered in the test locations consisted of a brown silty sand. At test location 1, the DCP recorded 9 blows at 1 foot depth, 9 blows at 2 feet, 10 blows at 3 feet, and 9 blows at 4 feet. At test location 2, the blows recorded were 8 blows at 1 foot, 8 blows at 2 feet, 10 blows at 3 feet, and 12 blows at 4 feet. At test location 3 located between approximately 270 ft and 280 ft along the wall alignment, the DCP recorded 5 blows at 1 foot depth, 9 blows at 2feet, 12 blows at 3 feet, 12 blows at 4feet indicating relatively weaker soil conditions at the 1-foot depth level. Based on the test results, it was recommended to the contractor to excavate an additional 1 foot of material over approximately 5 feet length and the required footing width in order to achieve required bearing. The contractor followed the recommendation and excavated the additional depth, after which the subgrade was re-leveled and compacted. Following this correction, No.57 stone was placed and spread evenly over the excavated section to prepare the footing base before reinforcement installation continued.
