Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day:

It was observed prior to the installation of the 18-inch storm drain along the future Taxiway A4 alignment that approximately 12 inches of No. 57 stone was placed continuously along the entire pipe bedding. Installation of the 18-inch reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) included the use of rubber gaskets and pipe lubricant to for proper joint sealing (see photos). Pipe placement progressed in a north-to-south direction.

A proof-roll was performed on the Taxiway A3 square extension area from Station 40+00 to Station 41+00 using a loaded tandem axle dump truck. Representatives from UES, ASEC, and C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. were present during testing.  During the proof-roll, subgrade instability was observed, including rutting and pumping, consistent with previously documented conditions. Based on these observations, UES recommended the same remediation approach as previously established. This includes placement of geotextile fabric over the subgrade, followed by 12 inches of No. 4 stone, and an additional 12 inches of Graded Aggregate Base (GAB) to support future asphalt paving.

Geotextile fabric was installed in the subject area (see photos); however, placement of the No. 4 stone was not completed on this date (see photo).

No further observations were made.
