Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services.  Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

On the above date our representative was on site to observe the paving contractor NWGP place 19mm asphalt binder mix at Nature Walk Parkway and Phase 1A and 1B. The contractor placed approximately 700 tons of binder mix. The writer observed most of the placement paving and performed random density checks on in-place binder mix using a Troxler Nuclear gauge model 3430, serial no. 91643. Based on the specific gravity obtained from the contractor (2.44) the calculated theoretical value was found to be 152.3 pcf. Most areas observed at Phase 1B had compaction results below 92% with slight to moderate cracking visible after compaction efforts. Also performed readings for Nature Walk Parkway between sanitary sewer manholes #9 and #10 with similar results. Temperature checks were also performed on the mix during paving.

1. Density readings at Phase 1B (all in pcf): 139.6 13, 140.4, 133.6, 132.8, 134.7, 133.2, 136.2, 134.1, 132.2 and 132.7.

2. Density readings at Nature Walk Parkway (all in pcf): 138.8, 140.6, 136.6, 134.4, 133.3, 132.4 and 136.9.

3. Random asphalt temperature checks (all in degrees Fahrenheit): 285, 305, 295, 280, 310 and 300 degrees.
