Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials
submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Our ASEC representative was on site to observe the contractor and for the observation/testing of the placement of fill/backfill. The contractors removed the unsuitable materials from the existing to D-3 sewer line in the road on Garibaldi Street. The contractor then started placing soil from the Hollywood site in approximately 8-to-12-inch lifts and compacted using a trench roller. ASEC watched the compaction efforts, but noticed pumping was present under the trench roller. ASEC pointed out this problem to the contractors. Probe rod testing was performed, and the probe rod entered the soil lift by approximately 1 foot to 2 feet in most of the lift. The contractors decided to remove the soil and replace with GAB as ASEC had initially recommended. ASEC recommended to add water to the GAB, as the contractors were rolling in dry GAB. The GAB did not appear to be compacting until water was added. Density testing was performed, but a grab sample was taken to our lab to perform a proctor 0n the GAB and will not be available until next week.
