Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

At CB8.7 to CB8.8, the trench had been excavated to the required depth, and installation of approximately 20 feet of 18-inch reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) was in progress at the time of observation. Between CB8.8 and CB8.9, approximately 30 feet of 18-inch RCP had been installed. Following pipe installation, approved backfill material was placed in lift around the pipe and compacted using a jumping jack compactor to provide adequate pipe support and embedment.

Elsewhere on the site, the contractor removed approximately 3 feet of saturated soil from the temporary pond area. Large boulders/rock were then placed in the excavated area to improve stability and minimize the effects of the forecasted rainfall.

Near the main roadway adjacent to the residence located at 2677 Thompson Mill Road, standing water had accumulated near the property’s entrance/gate. To improve drainage in this area, the contractor installed a manhole and backfilled the excavation with onsite soil. Although the backfill material was observed to be wet, it was compacted using trench compactor. It was noted that this work was performed to address the localized drainage issue and that the area is outside the limits of the approved construction plans.
