Summary *

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services.  Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Our representative was on site to observe proof-rolling of the deceleration lane subgrade for Seven Hills Boulevard.  The subgrade was proof-rolled using a loaded tandem dump truck making two passes over all areas.  In attendance were members from the grading contractor, paving contractor and our client, Artisan.

Several areas were observed to have moderate to severe movement under proof-rolling.  Due to several utilities in place the following recommendations were made to lessen deep undercutting:

1:  Clip the upper side of the lane's subgrade soils 2" to 3" and the lower side of the lane's 6" and remove loose clippings.

2:  Place Tensar geosynthetic fabric over the entire subgrade area.

3.  Keep traffic off subgrade soils while placing base course stone.  Recommendation was to place full depth subbase stone in one lift (18"), but paving contractor elected to place a 12" lift and compact and then place an additional 6" lift and compact.  These repair measures should be observed by our on-site engineering technician.  However, if rain occurs prior to completing repairs the subgrade should be re-evaluated prior to stone placement.
