Observations/Finding
Summary
*
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day. Our ASEC representative was on site for the observation/testing of the placement of fill/backfill. The contractor continued to place structural fill long Lots #1 through #4 area. Fill was installed in approximately 8-inch to 12-inch lifts and compacted with a HAMM vibrating sheep's foot roller. As loaded trucks rolled across the lift, ASEC watched for any signs of pumping/rutting. There were no signs of severe pumping/rutting, and the lifts appear to be stable. Density testing was performed, and all test results were provided to the contractor. Any failed tests were addressed. Topsoil that was stockpiled on the upper slope above Lots #1 through #4 and was moved to the slope of the main pond (in front of site by deceleration lane). The topsoil was rolled in with a dozer. The contractor continued placing pipe to structure BC5 in deceleration lane. Once the contractor backfilled approximately 2 feet over pipeline, ASEC performed density testing. All test results were provided to the contractor, and any failing tests were addressed. It was recommended by ASEC to the contractor to keep the lift size to approx. 8 inches to 12 inches during the backfill of the pipeline. Once the contractor reaches approximately 2 ft to 3 ft of fill over the pipeline, it was recommended to use a small sheeps-foot roller to finish out the compaction of the backfill. The small walk behind trench roller does not appear to be able to provide proper compaction on lifts exceeding approx. 6in. The contractor agreed. We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any questions regarding this report, please feel free to contact us. We will be more than happy to discuss it with you.
