Observations/Finding
Summary
*
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day. On the above date our representative was on site to observe repairs for failed asphalt pavements at the utilities crossing the roadways. Upon arrival our representative observed several locations along the site roads which had been saw cut approximately six feet wide for removal of asphalt pavement to repair settlement issues causing dips in roadways. The first cut-out section at rear roadway observed revealed saturated base stone to a depth of six inches. The base stone was removed, and the underlying fill soils were probed using a rounded end steel rod which was easily probed three feet indicating loosely compacted fill. It was recommended to undercut these soft fill materials over the water line and replace with compacted soils, compacted GAB stone, or class B concrete. The contractor had stated that he would be using GAB base stone for replacement backfill. The GAB stone should be placed in one-foot lifts and compacted with sufficient moisture using a hand tamp compacting to at least 98% of the base course proctor. The contractor elected to place base stone to 6 inches below finished grade and then cap with 6 inches of concrete. Asphalt paving can be placed over concrete. Compaction efforts of the replaced base stone backfill should be observed by an ASEC representative. We appreciate the opportunity to be of service to you on this project. If you have any questions regarding this report, please feel free to contact us. We will be more than happy to discuss it with you.
