Observations/Finding
Asphalt batch plant silo pad construction located at 570 Cherokee Boys Estate Road, Dalton, Georgia. The pad dimensions measured 77 feet in length by 45 feet in width and had been cut to a 5-foot depth. Construction consists of a concrete slab 4” thick underlain by a 6” mud mat on top of 12” of graded aggregate base (GAB).
Contractor informed our ASEC representative that the previous structure had been removed and the area excavated to the observed depth. The contractor had placed and compacted twelve (12) inches of graded aggregate base (GAB) imported from Vulcan materials prior to the representative’s arrival. A GAB sample was collected from the on-site stockpile and delivered to our laboratory to perform a moisture-density relationship. Various random locations were excavated down through the GAB to perform DCP testing of the underlying subgrade.
Our representative performed Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing and found the subgrade soils to be suitable for soil bearing pressures of 2,500 psf.
In addition, our representative performed nuclear density testing in random areas of the compacted GAB materials. Results are attached.
