Observations/Finding

The site was visited by the undersigned AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to assure compliance with project drawings/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were made on site today:

Upon arrival it was observed that graded aggregate base (GAB) placement for deceleration lane undercutting was continuing.

A meeting was held with Chris, superintendent with Charles Pruitt graders, as well as Donnie the foreman to discuss remediation issues.  The “entrance” location (an area approximately 20 feet x 50 feet directly adjacent to the deceleration lane) probed soft to more than 24 inches deep.  This area of concern was also discussed with Ken Mosman of ASEC.  This area is at the main entrance and is experiencing heavy construction equipment traffic.

A recommendation was made to undercut 24 inches below the original GAB level in the “entrance” for an area of 20 feet x 50 feet.  Due to the fact that probing still exhibited softness another 6 to 8 inches below after already undercutting 24 inches, it was recommended to use of a GeoTextile fabric along with the 24 inches of GAB covering this unstable area.  It was observed that Mirafi® HP570 was installed prior to the placement of 24 inches of GAB.

See density test results in a separate report.
