Observations/Finding

Our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative was on site for the purpose of providing visual quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawings/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were made on site today for the placement of asphalt paving for the following areas:

Our ASEC representative observed that approximately two (2) inches of asphalt was placed on Milton Road (an area that was previously milled from Teasley Street to and including the intersection at Roswell/Canton Street).  This area also included a small parking lot in front of the Alpharetta Animal Hospital.  Paving equipment (two smooth-drum rollers, a pneumatic roller, a LeeBoy 8616B Paver plus various equipment) was staged while all sections to be paved were blown off and swept clean.  Our representative also observed that a tack coat was applied to each section prior to paving. (See photo).  A 12.5 MM Super Paver mix (Mix Design ID #48R-12.5SP-117-4) was the material used from Metro Materials Inc, located in Doraville, GA.

During asphalt placement, asphalt temperatures were periodically as trucks arrived on site and prior to placement.  All asphalt temperatures checked averaged 290 degrees Fahrenheit or above.

Following asphalt placement and compaction, density testing was completed using a Troxler 3430 (serial #39588).

Initial compaction testing was performed on the parking lot section in front of Alpharetta Animal Hospital:

Test #1 location was the west side of the parking area.  Further re-compaction was requested and completed with the smooth drum roller and pneumatic roller.

Test #2 location was the east side of the parking area.  Further re-compaction was requested and completed with the smooth drum roller and pneumatic roller.  (See photo).

Test #3 location was Milton Road west section (east bound lane).

Test #4 location was the center section of Milton Road (east bound lane).

Test #5 location was the east section of Milton Road (east bound lane).

Test #6 location was the Milton/Roswell & Canton Street intersection (southwest).

Test #7 location was the Milton/Roswell & Canton St intersection (southeast).  Additional re-compaction was requested and completed with a smooth drum roller and pneumatic roller.  Both tests (#6 and #7) were retested.

Test #8 location was the center of Milton Road just west of the intersection.

Test #9 location was the center of Milton Road (halfway).

Test #10 location was the center of Milton Road (west end).

Test #11 location was the west end of Milton Road (north lane).

Test #12 location was the center of Milton Road (north lane).

Test #13 location was the east end of Milton Road (north lane).

Test #14 location was the Milton/Roswell & Canton Street intersection (northeast).

Test #15 location was the Milton/Roswell & Canton Street intersection (northwest).
