Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative noted above, for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services, visual observation techniques were employed to assure compliance with project drawing/specifications.

A request was made by CW Matthews for Nuclear compaction testing for the top lift of Graded Aggregate Base (GAB). Placement of GAB below this final lift was not observed by the writer. A Hamm vibratory smooth drum roller was used (see photo).

A Proctor curve was not available for the recycled GAB that was being used at this time. Recycled GAB being used was supplied by Luck stone. For this reason the GAB theoretical density per GDOT Quality Products List for May 2023 was used. the numbers were 123.2 pcf @ 5.2 % Moisture was used with a 95% compaction requirement. A troxler 3430 serial number 38069 was used with Tony from QA in attendance.

Test 1 (between manholes 4 & 5) Fail.

131.6 Dry Density (DD)

5.6% Moisture (M)

A recommendation was made for additional compactive effort to increase the Dry Density.  This was observed.

Re-Test  (between manholes 4 & 5)

132.2 DD

5.3%M

A recommendation was made for additional compactive effort and was observed.

Re-test (between manholes 4 & 5)

131.2 DD

4.8% M

Additional compaction had no effect to increase the dry density of the area.  A discussion with Mike Daniels and Will martin in regards to the compaction.  No recommendation was made.
