Observations/Finding
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.
Project Location: South of 4.3 for Lot 084-02
Overview: Continuation of sanitation sewer work involved the placement of a lateral (8-inch green pipe) just south of 4.3 for Lot 084-02. The installation process included the use of stone bedding and subsequent lifts, along with specific measures for road preparation and compaction testing considerations.
Installation Details:
- Sanitation Sewer Lateral Placement:
- The lateral (8-inch green pipe) was placed just south of 4.3 for Lot 084-02.
- Approximately 6 inches of 57 stone bedding was utilized to provide stable support for the sanitation pipe.
- Stone Bedding and Additional Layer:
- Following the placement of the sanitation pipe, an additional 6 inches of 57 stone was placed above the pipe.
- Subsequent Lifts:
- Subsequent lifts ranged between approximately 3 to 4 feet in depth. We recommended that lift thicknesses be kept to 8 to 12 inches.
- Road Preparation:
- Graded aggregate base (GAB) was utilized beneath the future road to provide a stable foundation. Soil was used as fill in all other areas.
- Compaction Testing Considerations:
- Compaction testing was deemed impractical due to the trench depth and the mix of soil and rock fill.
- City Inspector Notification:
- The Calhoun city inspector on site was notified of the lift thickness placement.
Recommendations:
- Continuous Monitoring:
- Regular monitoring of the sewer installation and compaction efforts should be maintained.
- Quality Assurance Measures:
- Implementing quality assurance measures, such as visual inspections and adherence to established guidelines, can help mitigate potential issues during installation.
Conclusion: The placement of the sanitation sewer lateral involved procedures, including the use of stone bedding, subsequent lifts, and preparation for road construction. Compaction testing was not feasible.
