Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services.  Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Location: Section from 4.4 to 4.5

Summary: Continuation of the placement of sanitation sewer from 4.4 to 4.5 was undertaken on this day. An 8-inch ductile iron pipe was utilized on the main line. Rock was encountered just south of 4.5, necessitating the use of a hoe-hammer for one hour.  recommendations made for compaction methods and lift depths were not followed. Testing was hindered due to the depth of the trench. Excavation for the next lateral northeast of 4.4 (087-02) was initiated.

Key Events:

  1. Main Line Placement:
    • An 8-inch ductile iron pipe was used for the main line sewer from 4.4 to 4.5.
    • Rock was encountered just south of 4.5, requiring the use of a hoe-hammer for excavation.
  2. Bedding Materials:
    • For the lateral northeast of 4.4 (086-02), 6 inches of 57 stone was utilized for bedding, while graded aggregate base (GAB) was used for the remainder beneath the future road.
    • Lift depths varied, with approximately 2 to 3-foot depths for the lateral and 4 to 5-foot lifts for the main line between 4.4 and 4.5.
  3. Compaction Recommendations:
    • Trench packer and riding vibratory sheepsfoot were employed for compaction.
    • A recommendation of 6-inch lifts for compaction using the trench packer and 12 inches with a ride-on vibratory roller was provided to the foreman but not followed.
  4. Testing Constraints:
    • Testing could not be completed due to the depth of the trench, which impeded access for testing equipment.
  5. Excavation of Next Lateral:
    • Excavation for the next lateral northeast of 4.4 (087-02) commenced.
