Observations/Finding
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative to provide quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawings, specifications, applicable codes, and material submittals. The following observations and results were documented during the site visit.
Observations
- Backfill Placement and Compaction:
- The placement and compaction of backfill soils for the SSFM were observed in front of Lots #132 through #136. Work was also in progress for the stabilization of Retaining Wall #1 footing between Station 0+15 and Station 0+95.
- Riprap and Backfill Layers:
- At the time of arrival, the contractor was placing a 2-foot layer of riprap, followed by a 2-foot layer of No. 34 stone. Above these layers, 1-foot lifts of backfill were being placed for the SSFM.
- The contractor used a 6-ton pad sheepsfoot roller and trench compaction equipment to ensure proper compaction.
- Compaction Testing:
- Testing was conducted using the Standard Test Method for Density of Soil in Place by Drive-Cylinder (ASTM D2937). Additionally, general probing was performed with a 3/8-inch diameter probe rod.
- Density test results indicated that most of the compacted materials met the project requirement of 95% of the maximum dry density as determined by the Standard Proctor Test (ASTM D698).
Results
- The backfill soils in the inspected areas met the specified compaction requirements, confirming compliance with project standards and specifications.
- Observations of stabilization work for Retaining Wall #1 footing indicate proper material placement and adherence to the specified construction methods.
