Observations/Finding
As requested, our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative visited the site to provide quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawings/specifications, applicable codes, and material submittals.
Site Observations:
- The installation and placement and compaction of GAB for retaining wall #1 was in progress.
- The placement of ride rock blocks was in progress.
- Geo-grid reinforcement was installed with every course of the wall.
- A 1-foot layer of No. 57 stone was utilized behind the blocks and within the wall cells.
- At the time of arrival, for retaining wall, work was being conducted with 9-inch lifts placed and compacted using 9-ton smooth drum and trench compaction equipment.
Testing Performed:
- Compaction Testing:
- Testing was conducted using a Troxler nuclear density gauge in accordance with ASTM D 2937 (Standard Test Method for Soil Density).
- General probing was performed with a 3/8″ diameter probe rod.
- Results:
- GAB Density test results indicate that most of the compacted materials met the project requirement of 92% of the maximum dry density as determined by Modified Proctor ASTM D 1557-12.
Conclusion:
The work observed and tested on-site today demonstrates compliance with the project’s specified requirements for compaction and density.
