Observations/Finding

At the request of the client’s representative, AS ENGINEERING AND CONSULTING, LLC (ASEC) representative Amin Azimi visited the job site to observe the contractor’s work activities from a quality assurance standpoint. The purpose of the visit was to verify compliance with project drawings, specifications, applicable codes, and approved material submittals, as well as to conduct quality control testing in accordance with project requirements.

During this shift, work was in progress on Phase 1B and 1Cof Runway 3R-21L.

A third-proof roll was performed on the graded aggregate base (GAB) finish grade in Phase 1B between STA 1047+63 and 1056+00 using a fully loaded tandem axle truck. This area included five previously identified locations that were recommended to be undercut by 1 foot, lined with fabric, and bridged with GAB. Multiple passes were performed across the finish grade, and no severe yielding or deflection was observed during this proof-rolling.

The proof-rolling activities were jointly observed by the undersigned (Amin Azimi) and Christian (QC Representative from Nova). Additionally, the contractor placed 8 inches of GAB in Phase 1C from STA 1058+00 to 1069+81.

ATL Paving was observed mixing soil cement in Phase 1D from STA 1075+00 to 1080+03 and in Phase 1E on Taxiway A from STA 80+00 to 86+00.

Compaction testing was performed on the finish grade GAB in Phase 1B from STA 1054+63 to 1058+63 using a Troxler nuclear density gauge. The test results indicated that most of the compacted material met the project requirement of achieving a minimum of 100% of the maximum dry density, in accordance with ASTM D1557 (Modified Proctor).

We appreciate the opportunity to be of service on this project. Should you have any questions regarding this report, please do not hesitate to contact us. We would be pleased to discuss our findings further.
