Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials
submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Our ASEC representative was on site to observe the contractor (NG Grading) and for the observation/testing of the placement of fill/backfill.

The grading crews continued placement of topsoil along slopes and greenspace areas. The soil lifts were approximately 12 inches in thickness and compacted using a sheep-foot roller.

The pipe crew continued backfilling of sewer pipeline 2.0 to 2.1 located in the roadway by Lot #25. Density testing was performed and test results were provided to the contractor.

The wall crew placed geogrid in the excavated undercut in the footing of retaining wall #5. Then the contractors spread approx. 4 feet of No. 57 stone into the 4-foot undercut section of the wall. They spread approximately 8 to 12 inches of No. 57 stone in the 2-foot undercut location. This was not recommended by ASEC. Upon inspection, ASEC recommended to remove the GAB that was placed and to spread the No. 57 stone as per our original recommendation (2 feet of No. 57 stone with a 6-inch cap of GAB). The contractor argued about how long the wait had been to get started and how it’s not their job to spread the rock out into the footing. Density testing was performed, and test results were provided to the contractor.
