Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Crew began work at locations B7–B8 by excavating the soil along the proposed storm line to the required depth and width. The subgrade was then leveled and prepared, and a layer of gravel bedding was placed and graded. A corrugated metal pipe (CMP) was installed from B7 toward B8 and aligned to the required grade. At B8, a manhole was installed and set on the prepared gravel base. All pipe-to-manhole connections were sealed with concrete. After completing the installation, backfill material was placed around the manhole and pipe in lifts of approximately 6–8 inches. Each lift was compacted using a drum roller for the general backfill and a jumping jack compactor in confined areas around the manhole.

Meanwhile, the other crew resumed backfilling operations at locations F2–F3. The available backfill material contained excessive moisture and did not meet the required density; however, due to the forecasted rainfall, the contractor directed the crew to proceed with backfilling to protect the installed pipes and structures. The soil was placed in lifts around the manhole and pipe, with the understanding that the material would be reworked on the next working day once suitable conditions were available to achieve the required compaction.
