Daily Field Report
Observations/Finding
As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.
Crew continued backfilling operations in Lots #49, 50, 51, 52, 53, and 56. The material was placed in lifts and compacted using a sheep-foot roller and a Caterpillar 815 compactor. However, during inspection, it was observed that the placed material did not meet the required compaction/density standards. This was primarily due to the presence of excessive moisture content in the fill material and inadequate compaction effort. The lifts were relatively thick in some areas, which further contributed to insufficient compaction.
In the neighboring Buford area, the crew continued trench excavation activities using a hydraulic excavator equipped with a rock grinder attachment, along with a standard hydraulic excavator. The excavation progressed to the required depth while breaking and removing rock encountered in the trench.
Recommendations:
- Place backfill in thinner, controlled lifts instead of thick layers.
- Increase the number of compaction passes to achieve required density.
- Avoid placing additional fill until the previous lift meets density requirements.
