Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

The crew resumed work from the previously installed section at the existing manhole on the D2 sewer line, where approximately 12 lineal feet of 24-inch RCP had been installed.

Today’s activities included excavating the trench to the required line and grade, leveling the subgrade, and placing No. 57 stone bedding beneath the pipe. The crew then installed approximately 18 lineal feet of 24-inch reinforced concrete pipe (RCP). During excavation, wet and saturated soils were encountered within the trench. As excavation progressed, graded aggregate base (GAB) materials were also encountered. Due to the wet condition of the excavated materials, it was recommended that the material be mixed with GAB during backfilling operations to improve stability and workability.

No density or compaction tests were performed during today’s operations. According to discussions held on site with Mike J. Perry (Superintendent), Brian Harper, and contractor Dennis with Lewis Contracting, only one compaction test is required for approximately every 250 lineal feet of backfilled trench associated with manhole installations. The contractor stated that testing services would be requested if and when required during subsequent backfilling operations.
