Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials
submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Our ASEC representative was on site to observe the contractor and for the observation/testing of the placement of fill/backfill. ASEC was requested to be onsite for the documentation of the excavation of the lots near the temporary pond. The contractors are excavating wet material (mixture of grey clay, topsoil, and brown soil). ASEC probe rodded the base grade after excavation, and the probe rod testing showed this area was not stable or suitable for backfill placement. With the presence of the grey clay, the contractor is most likely right above the water table. In one section, the contractor had to replace the soil with a mixture of No. 57 stone and a less saturated soil. The ground water quickly began to fill the hole.

ASEC recommended to the contractor to order a stone of their choice (either rip rap or baby surge stone) to use as a bedding and to haul in drier fill to the site. It would be best to have the material on site during the excavation to immediately replace any removed soils before the hole fills with ground water. ASEC informed the contractor to let ASEC know when they have material onsite to begin the remediations.
