Observations/Finding

As requested, the site was visited by our AS Engineering and Consulting (ASEC) representative for the purpose of providing quality control inspection and testing services. Visual observation techniques were employed to verify compliance with project drawing/specifications, applicable codes, and materials
submittals. The following observations were observed on site this day.

Our ASEC representative was on site to observe the contractor (NG Grading) and for the observation/testing of the placement of fill/backfill.

The pipe crew continued installation of storm line 3.1 to 3.2. Backfill was placed in approximate 1-foot lifts and compacted using a sheep-foot roller and a trench roller. Density testing was performed and test results were provided to the contractor.

The grading crew continued to assist the wall crew in installing retaining wall 1. The wall crew has expressed complaints of the footing not being over excavated past the face of the wall stakes. They are removing approximately 6 inches of soil along the face of the wall. The contractors started placing the topsoil in the middle of the footing. ASEC recommended to remove the topsoil before any installation of baskets, as the topsoil is not structural fill. The grading crew spread approximately 8-to-12-inch lifts across the baskets and compacted using their sheep-foot roller. Density testing was performed, and test results were provided to the contractor.

The wall crew has not been using their own equipment to compact this area. The wall crew damaged a drainage pipe with their skid steer, and it appeared that they tried to cover up the damage instead of replacing the pipe. ASEC documented this and informed the contractor that they need to replace the pipe. The wall crew watched as the grading crew hand shoveled the dirt around the pipe to fix the wall crew’s damage.
