Daily Field Report
Observations/Finding
Our ASEC representative was on site as requested by the contractor (Wilbanks) for the observation/testing of the placement of fill/backfill. The technician observed the contractor place 1 lift approximately 8 inches in thickness over Lots #121 through #125 and #112 through #117. Fill materials tested were found to be much higher than optimum moisture content and was left to aerate in place to reduce in-situ moistures prior to compaction.
-
Debris in Embankment Material: Debris was observed within the embankment fill. The technician recommended that all debris be removed from the embankment lifts prior to compaction.
-
Oversized Boulders: Several large boulders were identified in the embankment material. The technician advised the contractor to remove all boulders exceeding 12 inches in diameter, as they do not meet project specifications.
-
Soft Areas Identified: Certain areas of the embankment lift were found to be soft when checked using a probe rod. As a corrective measure, the technician recommended an additional two to three roller passes. The contractor followed the recommendation and performed the recompaction.
Field Density Testing:
A total of four (4) drive-cylinder density tests were performed to evaluate compaction quality at the following locations and depths:
-
Station 23+00 – Depth: 4 feet to subgrade layer
-
Station 21+00 – Depth: 7 feet to subgrade layer
-
Station 19+00 – Depth: 8 feet to subgrade layer
-
Station 23+00 – Depth: 1 foot to subgrade layer
Note: Test results are provided separately in the attached Field Density Report.
Equipment Used for Embankment Operations:
-
2 Rollers
-
2 Dozers
-
4 Trucks
-
3 Excavators
