Observations/Finding
FIELD OBSERVATIONS
On the above date, an AS Engineering and Consulting, LLC (ASEC) representative visited the site at the contractor’s request to observe earthwork operations and perform quality control testing in accordance with the project drawings, specifications, and approved materials submittals.
On this date, the contractor completed backfill placement at the wall area to an approximate total height of 6 feet using multiple controlled lifts. Backfill was placed in thin lifts, moisture conditioned as required, and compacted using a sheepsfoot roller in conjunction with tracked equipment.
TESTING AND RESULTS
Field in-place density and compaction testing was performed at approximately 2-foot vertical intervals. All test results met project-specified compaction requirements at the time of observation.
ADDITIONAL OBSERVATIONS
The contractor also excavated soils from the central portion of the proposed detention pond for evaluation of suitability as backfill material. Soils excavated below approximately 3 feet exhibited softer consistency and darker coloration, indicative of more organic-leaning material. Based on visual observation and material condition, these deeper soils were considered less suitable for structural backfill and were not recommended for use behind the wall.
No instability, rutting, or movement was observed in the completed backfill areas. Earthwork operations are expected to continue as planned.
